Hong Kong mahjong
also called Cantonese mahjong (廣東麻雀) — is the classic 13-tile game: build four melds and a pair, and reach the table's minimum faan to win. Check out the scoring rules, or jump right to the faan calculator and use it with your in person games.
How Hong Kong mahjong works
Hong Kong mahjong (香港麻雀) is played with 13 tiles. You win on the 14th by completing four melds and a pair, or a special hand such as Seven Pairs or Thirteen Orphans. What sets it apart is faan (番): a hand must be worth at least three faan before you can declare it, and every two faan above that doubles your payout, up to the thirteen-faan limit.
Who pays depends on how you win. On a discard, only the player who threw your tile pays, at double the base. On a self-pick, all three opponents pay the base, and the self-pick itself adds one faan.
You may chow only from the player on your left; pungs and kongs can be claimed from anyone. A kong earns a replacement draw from the back of the wall, and winning on it is worth two faan. Flowers and seasons are set aside and replaced as soon as you draw them: your own flower and your own season score one faan each, and a hand with no flowers at all scores one too. There is no furiten: you may win on a tile you discarded earlier.
